Sing plainsong / gregorian chant / plainchant and explore one of the pillars of Western music

For many modern listeners the sounds of Gregorian chant are compelling - words and rhythms at once familiar and remote. Even without a musical background or knowledge of its religious significance people respond to the chant’s sensuous tranquility.

Some of the melodies are at least 1500 years old, yet the music is still sung live every day in towns, cities, and villages around the world.

The Benedict Biscop Gregorian Choir learns and performs gregorian chant and other plainsong.

We enjoy singing together as we explore some of the roots of Western music and try to relate the heritage of this music to life in the 21st century.

When we perform, our programmes include musicians from other traditions, so that together we all experience similarities and contrasts.
