Next Event - 9 June 2019

The Benedict Biscop Gregorian Choir is singing in the glorious acoustic of Brinkburn Priory in the Coquet Valley, a few miles southeast of Rothbury this summer in their innovative Summer Sundays series, in which several music groups each present a short programme throughout the afternoon.

Starts 12.45pm.  BBGC sings at 4pm... bring a picnic!

Chant relating to St Thomas of Canterbury (Thomas Becket) including Gaudeamus omnes, Alleluia:Gloria et honore and Gaude Thoma, as well as pieces written by Godrich of Finchale (near Durham) and Hildegard of Bingen

Next year, 2020, is the 850th  anniversary of the martyrdom of Thomas Becket. To mark this, BBGC is teaming up with the Fitzsimons choir and actor Chris Wardale in an exciting new project that will be unique amongst celebrations of the Becket anniversary.

in a joint performance of William Byrd’s polyphonic three-part mass, BBGC will sing chant transcribed by Jonathan Adams from ‘The Petre Gradual,’ which date from the later Middle Ages and celebrate Thomas Becket and would have been known to Byrd, as he was was in the employment of the owner of the Gradual.

To complete the performance, Chris Wardale, an actor will be reading from the 20th century play, TS Eliot’s ‘Murder in the Cathedral’ at appropriate places in the mass.

In a studio/work in progress performance this Autumn, BBGC, Fitzsimons singers and Chris Wardale will present extracts from the 2020 full performance.

A good number of our members have already performed some of these pieces of chant this year, in Bowes museum, Jarrow Hall and Brinkburn Priory.

We are now moving the project on apace and this Autumn we will present parts of the mass with chant and readings and perhaps some other pieces, including Fitzsimons singers and Chris Wardale in the Lit & Phil library in the centre of Newcastle. This is an important step towards next year, when we will perform the full version in the summer of 2020.

In 2020 we are working towards a larger event including a full mass by William Byrd, who we know used the Petre Gradual as he was a close friend of its owner at the time and there will also be a literary component and talks given by our choir director, who is involved with the transcription of the Gradual, which may interest the library.
